For our guests that fly into Mammoth, getting around can be done by 3 different ways; 1) Taking a taxi, 2) Utilizing our free shuttle system or 3) Renting a car. For those that rent cars, often times you'll be flying into Los Angeles International (LAX) or Reno Tahoe International (RNO) and driving the rest of the way. It is a beautiful way to see the scenery and many of attractions along the way, such as Manzanar, Mt. Whitney or the Bristlecone Forest.
We've found that you can get a wide variety of rental cars and choices through our Rental Cars at Los Angeles Airport partner who also services many other areas. In the winter be sure to get a 4 wheel drive vehicle so you don't have to deal with tire chains. In the summer, get a convertible so you can have the wind blow in your hair with the top down.
Choosing the Right Rental Car
There are some important things to remember when choosing your rental car company and the kind of car you would like to choose. As Mammoth is a destination resort, there are not a lot of choices so you want to be sure you can get your car replaced or repaired if it should break down while you have it. When booking your rental car, ask if there is a local shop that can repair your car while you're on vacation. Or if you can get it exchanged should you need to.
In winter, make sure your car can handle the snow. Whether you are willing to put tire chains on the car, or you choose to have 4 wheel drive, you must be prepared to be driving in heavy snow. Most of the locals prefer 4 WD as that is the easiest way to go. You push a button and boom, you're driving in the snow. Always... be safe.
