Hiking in Mammoth Lakes
Hiking around Mammoth is an all year experience and certainly not be missed. In the early season, hikes are filled with trees getting their first leaves, the beginning of the waterfalls, and the birds and sounds of nature waking up. There may be snow on the ground, but trails never really close.
In summer, the mountainside is in its full glory with wildflowers, nature and the smell of the forest air. You'll also see lots of wildlife out in the forest from beautiful birds to our black bears. Little known fact is that Bighorn Sheep are native to our area, yet only reside at the highest of altitudes. You will find great hikes rated for ability in the Mammoth hiking trails sections.
In fall, there is a beautiful season with crisp mountain mornings, warm days and the opportunity to experience the colors that comprise the palette of autumn. Aspen, willow and cottonwood trees light up the slopes during this very special time of year. Fall is definitely photography season, so be sure to bring a camera and plenty of film. There are lots of guidebooks to help you find the right trails and trailheads.
The Mammoth Lakes Welcome center offers maps and directions to get you on trails that are right for your level. According to Julie, one of the long time forest service agents in the office "Mammoth hiking is at a new level of experience with sign posted trails, better groomed trailways and easier access thanks to our recreation department". She continues with "The town of Mammoth Lakes has spend $1,000,000s to preserve the natural beauty yet keep it open 100% with awesome public access."
There are hikes in Mammoth for all levels from beginner short hikes that are only 15 minutes to longer hikes up to 2 hours. You can even climb onto parts of the famous John Muir Trail or the Pacific Crest Trail both of which go right through Mammoth. Come on, put your adventure on. Get on a trail.
