Mammoth Fishing Season
Mammoth fishing season is a big deal. If you come to Mammoth in the late spring and summer you likely think of Mammoth as a fishing resort. If you come to Mammoth in winter, you'll be thinking about the Mammoth ski resort. The truth is that we're both... and dang good at it. Fishing in Mammoth starts the last Saturday of April and runs through the second Thursday of November right around November 14. This is the prime season for Mono County when the lakes are stocked, the trout are jumping and the local bait and tackle stores run plenty of "fish derbies" for prizes. But what makes Mammoth so special? and where are the best places to fish in Mammoth?
Probably the most significant aspect of fishing in Mammoth is that there are a lot of fish to catch. Between the Department of Fish and Game, the local hatcheries up and down the Eastern Sierra and our local Tim Alpers, trout are planted in the lakes so there is always something to catch. It is part of our culture here to keep the environment balanced, and if we didn't, the lakes would not have time to recover. The fishing stocking in the lakes is regular and consistent with each of the lakes getting a big dose of 1 - 3 pounders of a variety of kinds of trout. This balancing keeps Mammoth a great place to come and teach your family how to fish, spend some time with your buddies or just to come an unwind and have faith that you'll catch something. We're likely the most popular place to fish in all of California and the heritage runs deep.
There are to many places to list that have fish. Mammoth offers stream fishing, lake fishing, fishing where you can float, fishing where you can boat and fishing derbies so you can win a prize. A good place to start is the Mammoth lakes basin both because it is beautiful, and stocked, but because it is easy to get to. People often come just to hang out. Composed of 5 lakes it is the start of great exploration as many of the hiking trails lead to additional lakes that can only be reached by foot and the trailheads start here.
During the summer months, the town of Mammoth offers prizes for the biggest fish caught. Usually during a marked period of time, the fishing derbies are in honor or in conjunction with bigger events in town. If you're coming up to fish, the local tackle stores will have the details. It's worth the entry as you could win cash or sometimes even a boat! Whether the game is catch a tagged trout, or you just catch a big one, the thrill is the same when you win.
And let's not even start about what a great parent child activity this is...
