Mammoth Mountain Opening Day
Opening day is approaching. Mammoth Mountain officially opens on the 2nd Thursday of November and this year the prediction for lots of snow looks good. El Nino is back and if all things are a go, the chairs will be running at the Main Lodge. The ski resort will have the annual kick off party in The Village with live bands, food specials and evening entertainment on the weekend to welcome in the snow year.
Prediction is that Saturday November 9 will be opening day. The weather is chilling down, and we've already had snow. So if you're the one who needs to be there to honor the annual "I made it on opening day" resolution, then get it on the calendar now.
Years past, Mammoth has always held that the 2nd Thursday of November was opening day making them the the first west coast resort to open. With new snowmaking gear at many of the resorts, opening days all over could be earlier than their usual Thanksgiving time. The forecast for snow this year is very promising as the Alaskan cold fronts seem to make it through Tahoe and Mammoth and then blow across the desert. So just because it is not raining in Los Angeles, doesn't mean Mammoth isn't getting snow.
As always, the slopes will be filled with natural snow augmented by the famous Mammoth Mountain grooming. It is a tradition among Mammoth locals to ski the first day of the season and the last no matter how good (or bad) the actual conditions are. Thanksgiving however is usually the most popular time for local Southern Californias to come up for the first real ski. That is unless their is a huge dump.
The earliest this writer has skied is on October 31. Hey if you don't have family and want to join ours, come on up for some real hometown love. It's Mammoth, your homeaway from home.
