Well, we're off to a snowy start. It snowed nearly 20" at lower levels and as much as 60" at the top and even this week there was a little more snow. For Thanksgiving there were 83 trails open, 11 chairlifts running and the gondola to the top from Main Lodge all open. Thanksgiving has become the regular first holiday for first skiers and riders in Mammoth. When Mother Nature cooperates and the weather is chill, the ski runs are lined mostly natural snow. Right now, it is no different.
Mammoth is known for having the longest ski season of any US resort usually running from November to Memorial Day in May and often to Father's Day or July 4th. for 2017, it was one of the longest seasons with only 90 days of summer closure. Wow!.
Thanksgiving is the first big family holiday and Southern California families spend Thanksgiving in Mammoth as a change of pace from the traditional family gathering. In fact, many So Cal families, Mammoth race team families, and second homeowners look to Mammoth for Thanksgiving as their regular tradition.
Early season skiing is underway, and the vacation rentals and hotels are nearly booked for New Years. You can get lots of help from the City Concierge at Mammoth finding a place to stay. The time between Thanksgiving and Christmas is optimal ski time with no crowds. A nice 3 day weekend before the rush of the holidays. With all that is open, there is no reason not to use up this snowfall. And for those who would rather watch football, well, imagine skiing in the morning and then chilling by the fire and TV in the afternoon. Now this is living.
