Mammoth fishing season is officially open for the summer. Fishing around here is known for the delicious trout. In these parts, trout comes in all colors from rainbow to brown, and even a local variety known as Alper's. If you're ready to put your pole in the water, it is time to plan your vacation to the Eastern Sierra. Fishing season stays open until the second Saturday of November.
The Department of Fish and Game along with the town of Mammoth stock the local area waters with trout so there is always something to catch. While the schedule is semi regular, the town spreads the fish out at all the different lakes to make sure that no one lake goes empty, ensuring that you will have a good time while on your Mammoth vacation. Fishing expeditions to find our top secluded streams and rivers make fishing in Mammoth even more exciting. Most of the local guide shops can tell you exactly where the trout are running, so they are your best source of knowledge. It changes from day to day.
I didn't think my kids would love it as much as they did. Good quality time and beautiful scenery Dennis P.
Hard core fisherman know that throughout the season, and especially after Labor Day there are trout contests. Here one can get real competitive by catching a big fish, or a fish that has been tagged can which can win a prize, free lodging, or gets cash. There are often smaller fishing festivals during the prime summer months in conjunction with holidays or special events. Be sure to check out what is happening once you arrive. The most accurate information on where the trout are running and which fishing derbies are happening will be at either the local bait and tackle store or at the Mammoth Welcome Center. Don't forget to purchase your fishing license.
Inside the town of Mammoth Lakes there are 6 big lakes that you can drive to, and several more that you can only hike to. The popular lakes are Lake Mary, Mamie, Horseshoe, Gregory and Twin Lakes which also has a gorgeous waterfall. The best way to see the special "out of the way" lakes is to hire a guide and the fishing sporting goods stores can help you with that. The Mammoth fishing season is a classic part of the long time heritage of this area. Fisherman wait all year to get their poles in for those trouts that have been growing all winter. This is one activity that has been passed down from generation to generation with father's teaching their sons and daughters the tricks of the trade. Come this summer. Explore Mammoth and turn that first family fishing adventure into a long term habit!
